When an inventory count needs a second observer

A single auditor can observe a tidy warehouse with barcode scanners and a short SKU list. Multi-site counts, consignment stock, and manual bin cards change that math.

If stock sits in more than one location counted on the same morning, a second observer keeps the test independent. One person cannot watch two gates at once when goods move during the count.

Slow-moving or high-value items deserve directed testing. We ask the count team to locate serial-numbered equipment or precious materials while we stand nearby. The goal is not to recount everything; it is to see whether the count instructions are followed.

Write down exceptions as they happen: sealed boxes opened early, units moved without a transfer slip, or counts updated after the sheet was signed. Those notes feed the year-end adjustment discussion.

After the count, request the final compiled listing within two days. Delays usually mean manual roll-forwards that need extra testing before the financial statement audit can close inventory.
